For the past week, Victoria Conteh has been the manager of one of the best teams in the first division in Sierra Leone. A revolution because she is the first woman to be given such an important role in a very masculine world. Her ambitions for taking office are very clear; win the Premier League, the Sierra Leonean championship. But her first on the benches ended in a 1-1 draw against the capital club FC Kallon in Freetown.
Victoria Conteh at the head of the East End Tigers is no accident. The strong lady of the club has a well-stocked CV with extensive experience in the field. A former spearhead of the Sierra Queens national women’s team, she has already proven herself with the National Women’s Under-17 Selection. Before taking control of her new club, she coached a lower division (2nd division) men’s team.
In Africa, it’s a revolution because, she is the second woman coach of a first division football team after the Ethiopian Meseret Manni who had led the Dire Dawa team in 2015. It is also a step towards equality in a country where discrimination against women remains a sad reality, particularly in terms of access to education. Victorai Conteh, wants to seize this opportunity to go further. She plans to eventually take the lead of the Leone Stars, the national men’s selection.
