Decent housing is one of the five basic human needs. The Gabonese government after failing for a long time to deliver on its housing mandate due to the lack of funds finally gets some financial cushion from the African Development Bank. The ADB financial support will seek to help the banked population access decent housing.
The African Development Bank’s country manager, Robert Masumbuko and Gabon’s housing minister, Léon Armel Bounda Balonzi, have announced a special office will be soon opened in Libreville to facilitate housing access for Gabonese.
The modalities of this project require Gabonese willing to acquire a decent house to have at least a bank account in a commercial bank in Gabon, an account that should be eligible to take up loans from the said bank.
«People will remain close to their commercial banks. I believe there are six to seven here in Gabon. These banks will have access to our office through the Caisse de dépôts et consignation (Deposits and consignments fund) » Robert Masumbuku mentioned. According to him, this approach will enable «commercial banks to propose housing projects and get long-term funding. That is, for over 20 years and at very low-interest rates, in the range of 5%. »
It is important to note that the funds from the ADB are received at the Caisse de dépôts et consignation (Deposits and consignments fund) so as to enable commercial banks to submit their housing project.
In this initiative, the ADB seeks to ensure exclusion of the underprivileged does not occur so every Gabonese can live in a decent house.
